Osha Liang is seeking candidates having an emphasis on computer science, computer engineering (with strong math skills), applied mathematics, applied physics, or optical networking backgrounds. You will help analyze the patentability of inventions, including preparing and assisting in prosecuting patent applications, aid in assessing infringement risks for new products, and helping to guide the development of new products. Individuals who are hired will be placed in our unique Patent Agent Program, a forward-thinking, highly effective method for training and developing technically and legally savvy individuals.
The position incorporates technical knowledge and analytical skills, and requires you to apply them in a variety of technical fields. You will need to learn new technologies quickly and be able to teach others as well. The successful candidate must have strong communication (reading, writing, and speaking) skills using the English language. Candidates for this position are problem solvers. When drafting a patent application, you are required to study the technology and learn about the invention. During patent prosecution, you may need to determine how the invention differs from others in the marketplace. You can expect to spend half the day reading and studying the technical analysis of complex scientific topics within a particular patent application. The remainder of the day may be spent drafting and scheduling future projects. Some days may be focused on technology in one field, while other days may require work in more than one technical area. Candidates, in collaboration with patent agents and attorneys, continuously work together to solve problems on behalf of our clients.
The best candidate for this position is able to succeed in a business casual work environment with a client-focused, yet highly professional culture. You should enjoy working with small teams while being independently responsible for your individual tasks and deadlines. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent legal residents, or otherwise authorized to work in the U.S. Individuals who have earned or will soon earn a degree from an accredited U.S. University in one of the technical areas listed above with an extremely strong academic record (top 25%) are encouraged to apply. Coursework in applied math, economics, physics, and/or technical writing is a plus. Masters and PhD level qualifications and/or industry experience are preferred, but not required. Candidates should enjoy drafting narrative and persuasive documents while critically analyzing and solving problems. Time management skills are also critical.
