Osha Liang Recognized as a Top Firm for Patent Allowance in USPTO's Technology Center 3600

HOUSTON, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Osha Liang LLP has achieved a top-4 ranking by Juristat in patent examination allowance by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Technology Center 3600, the law firm said today.

The USPTO’s TC 3600 provides examination for a wide range of technologies, including software, business methods, and the oil and gas industry. With an allowance rate of 89.0 percent, Osha Liang was recognized as one of the most successful firms in this challenging technology unit.

The TC 3600-selected law firms were among IP Today’s top firms for 2015 and have at least 100 disposed applications in the technology center.

Jonathan P. Osha, Osha Liang’s managing partner, said, “We are pleased to again be included as one of the most successful firms at obtaining positive results for our clients. While allowance rate is merely one metric of success, we believe it is indicative of the technical and legal strength of our team at Osha Liang.”

The overall allowance rate for TC 3600 is 61.2 percent, which is below the USPTO average of 72.0 percent. In terms of average speed to disposition, it takes an average of 35.5 months to prosecute an application in TC 3600, which is similar to the USPTO average of 35.8 months.

TC 3600 has become increasingly complex to navigate after the Supreme Court’s decision in Alice v. CLS Bank, which narrowed the patentability of certain types of inventions, including those in the software field.

Osha added, “Our firm continues to be a leader in understanding how best to obtain broad, enforceable patents for the clients we represent. The proactive approach we are taking in this area continues to generate valuable patent rights on behalf of our clients.”
